They're Back...

Although Fort Collins does have a few Canadian Geese that make their year-round home here, the majority of them migrated in a few weeks ago.  This group had landed at HP and was in no hurry to get out of the way, so Brianne jumped out with the camera and, thereby, encouraged them to move a little faster...

For the most part, I don't mind them.  I'm rarely in a hurry, so waiting while they waddle across the streets is no big deal; but Daisy and my walks are suspended over the winter months as the local park is filled with them and their "left-overs" - eww!

"To Infinity and Beyond"

On December 30, 1924, Edwin Hubble announced the existence of galaxies outside of our own Milky Way and forever changed the way we look at the universe.  At that time, Hubble was studying through the Hooker Telescope, then the world's largest, from Mount Wilson in California.  His observations resulted in many new discoveries, including the Redshift Distance Law of Galaxies, now known as Hubble's Law, which states that the greater the distance between two galaxies, the greater the relative speed of separation. This discovery helped gain support for - never mind, this lesson could go on and on and on (just like our expanding universe).

What do you see when you look in the night sky?  My thoughts are less scientific.  I often wonder if there is someone out there, on the other side of our galaxy or beyond, looking at a beautiful sky full of stars and wondering the same things I am...

Home for the Holidays

Meet Sidney, our new family member. He is Ryan's baby Dumbo Rat.  Ryan brought Sid with him since he was going to be here for several days.

Call me odd, but I actually think he's cute and it is really funny to watch his tail disappear into Ryan's jacket!

Beautiful Winter Day

Fort Collins sits in its own little niche - we hardly ever get the extreme weather that Denver, just 60"ish" miles south, gets hit with.

I wimped out on this hike (I hate the cold) and look what I missed - an amazingly beautiful blue Colorado sky and a sexy guy!

Thanks, Honey!!

This is my FAVORITE gift this year!  Minnie gets 5 visits to the beauty salon without it involving me getting wet.   My favorite gift a couple of years ago was the in-sink hot water dispenser - silly, I know, but it's the simple things that make my life easier that I love the most!!

Light Bright

This house caused quite a fuss and has made the local news...  so, of course, we just HAD to see it!

Apparently, the HOA has notified the homeowners that they have too many pieces of yard art - the neighborhood only allows three ;-)

As it seems like most of the neighbors like it, my take on it is this:  One Grinch probably complained to the HOA, which was then required to advise the owner.  As in most situations, it only takes one person to cause a problem where one doesn't really need to exist.

Chillax and have an eggnog!

The Reason for The Season

Although brought up as Christians, we do not practice.  However, amidst all the craziness that this time of year brings, I like to pause and remember the basics...  For me, that means "Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men."  You do not have to be religious to feel the spirit of giving when you put coins in the bucket by the Salvation Army bell ringer or to feel your heart lighten with the twinkling of the cheerful holiday lights or to feel joy at the sight of your loved ones' faces as they open a special gift you have selected.
From our house to yours...  We Wish You Peace and Joy!

Silent Night

Silent Night was composed by Franz Joseph Gruber on December 24 in 1818. This instrumental version by Kenny G (Miracles album, 1994) is one of my favorites.  The link below plays his music with a nice holiday slideshow:

Let It Snow...

This is Doug snowing blowing yesterday morning.  We got somewhere between 4 - 5 inches, but it had pretty much quit by 9am.

This photo is a back view because the front view got censored - Doug made a gesture telling me I was #1 for taking his picture instead of helping...

Yule/ Winter Solstice

The day is short – And life is long
Sit vigil this night, Singing sun-songs.
Each night since Midsummer,
He has aged and rested
At last solstice the Oak King
Was bested-
But now at last, the Sun slowly returns
Minute by minute, he also yearns
To come to his people, to spread his light
On this darkest day he conquers
the night.

At this time of year, you need all the light you can get. String lights in our home, fill the house with baked goods and happy scents, and have friends over. Prepare hot drinks of teas, chocolates, and coffees, the better to warm the feet and trigger endorphins in your light-starved brain. The winter is always dark and long, but having friends makes it all bearable – especially since holiday stress can induse family angst. Have a tree or poinsettia to focus and filter all the energy that comes from living in a closed space. Sing songs whenever you can. The carol “Joy to the World” has a verse that starts “Joy to the Earth,” and can just as easily be about Pagan stories of winter survival. Be simple, be fancy, But be sure it all comes from the heart.

What's Going Around the Internet - Helpful Hints

My sister sent me this list of Clever Ideas to Help Make Life Easier.  Some of them were really cool, so I thought I'd share them, complete with pics...  They make you want to ask "Why didn't I think of that??"

1.  Hull strawberries easily using a straw.

The Next Always

I just finished this book...  Loved it and I can't wait for the next one to come out!  Nora Roberts is one of my favorite authors in the romance genre (every girl needs a few hearts and flowers on occasion).  Her stories are frequently told in trilogies with realistic characters set in a well-researched and planned scenarios, but often with something a little supernatural blended in.  This one has a ghost in an old inn that is being restored - her story has yet to be revealed, but I'm sure it will be :-)

Bah Humbug!

On December 19, 1843, Charles Dickens published "A Christmas Carol."  In the years since, there have been too many adaptions to count.  Two of my favorites are:

1992
Starring Michael Caine as Scrooge
1988

Dancing Around the Bon Fire

Headed out to the country for a down-home shindig hosted by Doug's co-worker.  Home-smoked turkey, tractor-pulled hayrides and a massive bon fire were on order for the evening.  I'm not a cold weather fan, but this fire kept even me nice and toasty :-)

Skating Rink

Always a bee hive of activity, Old Town is even busier than usual today with the slightly warmer weather and the upcoming holiday.  This skating rink is an Old Town Square tradition - lots of good ol' fashioned family fun to be had :-)

Big Bro

Daisy's big brother, Comet, is here for the holidays while his family visits Grandma and Grandpa in Costa Rica. Much more chaos around here with two of them...

Miss Watch Doggy

There are many perils this time of year, so a watch dog can't be too careful... Daisy is very busy guarding the entrance of her territory in order to keep it safe from the evils of the FedEx and UPS men.  It's a dangerous job, but somebody's got to do it!

Holiday Music

As I do my daily chores, I've been listening to the sounds of the season...  I've got a couple of albums I return to time and time again.  My all-time favorite is Manheim Steamroller A Fresh Aire Christmas from 1988.   I've downloaded my album to my iPod, but it can still be purchased - I found it on Amazon and iTunes.  Good things stand the test of time :-)

It's a Wonderful Life

"Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings."
        It's a Wonderful Life - 1946

I love this saying and taught it to my children when they were young.  I started using bells when we moved to Fort Collins and a multi-level house because I didn't like yelling for/at them and it was quicker than doing a full-house search.   Effective and fun!

This old bell has a beautiful ring and is coupled with a happy snowman for the winter holidays :-)

Breakfast at Lucile's

This is my favorite breakfast/brunch place in Fort Collins!  The original Lucile's was established in Boulder in 1980 and the second was opened here in Fort Collins in 1996.  You'll find it in a quaint little yellow house across the street from the Lincoln Center - get there early, the place is always hopping! Yesterday, I had a pecan waffle topped with a banana, apple slices, whip cream and pralines - YUM! Large portions - Doug finished his Hank's Eggs for dinner and Brianne plans on have her extras for breakfast today...

Shopping Traditions

Brianne and I joined the crowd of holiday shoppers on Saturday and, much to my delight,  I found my favorite holiday feature...  This wooden ball drop has been a staple at the Foothills Fashion Mall for as long as I can remember and it never fails to fascinate.  I love watching it :-)

Foggy Friday

A light fog rolled in early Friday morning and gave our neighborhood an "Alfred Hitchcock" feeling...  Just a little bit creepy, but eerily beautiful.

Lyric Cinemacafe

I am a new fan of this place!  The Lyric is a quirky little cinema and cafe in Old Town Fort Collins.  It has two theaters outfitted with a variety of old theatre seats and sofas.  The cafe offers a tempting selection of snack/appetizer options, like hummus, plus adult beverages.  Where else can you sip on wine and watch a flick?  It specializes in new small movies that will never make the big screen, but are worth watching.  We attended a fundraiser for the Fort Collins Bike Co-Op, which featured the documentary "With My Own Two Wheels."  Honestly, I thought it was going to be a snore, but was soon enthralled in the stories of how a bike has literally changed the lives of the people in the show.  I'm so glad I went!

This is the cafe.  They also
offer standard cinema popcorn :-)

This is a portion of the mural...
I just thought it was cool.

This is the interior of Cinema 1.
Comfy seating, small screen,
great atmosphere!

National Brownie Day - Woohoo!!!

I usually cheat and make mine from a box mix, but if you are feeling industrious, here's a good recipe:

Fudge Brownies
1/2 cup butter
2 squares (2 ounces) unsweetened chocolate
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease an 8x8x2-inch baking pan.  Melt butter and chocolate.  Remove from heat; stir in sugar.  Add eggs and vanilla; beat lightly until just barely combined (don't over beat).  Stir in flour and nuts. Spread batter in pan.  Bake for 30 minutes.  Cool, cut and eat :-)
I made these last night and the house smelled AMAZING!

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

December 7, 1941
"a day that will live in infamy"
- President Franklin D. Roosevelt

The Japanese launched an attack on the
US Fleet in Pearl Harbor.
Almost all ships were damaged;
5 of 8 battle ships were sunk or sinking;
2400 servicemen and 68 civilians were lost.
The US officially entered WWII.

This is the USS Arizona Memorial,
which we visited last November.
A very moving experience
and a fitting reminder of the lives lost to war
- all wars, not just WWII.

Seventy years later,
Japan is now one of our strongest allies.
May all earth's children learn the value of
working together and living in peace.

Cold, Cold Monday

With a high of only 13 degrees, I was, at first, surprised to find icicles forming on the shady side our little evergreen...   After taking a few photographs, I realized they were being formed from the melting of the icicles hanging from the roof above them - even on a very cold day, the sun warms up the front of our SW facing home :-)

I'll Drink To That!

On December 5, 1933
the 21st Amendment repealed Prohibition.
Cheers!!

In support of our local breweries,
I suggest Mothership Wit (an organic wheat beer)
from New Belgium or
Easy Street Wheat (with an orange slice)
from O'Dells...

Santa's List Day

Apparently, December 4th is the Final Day to Make the Cut...
Who knew there was a deadline??
Desperate times call for desperate measures,
so I'm going with Garfield's Plan:

Spiced Tea

As usual, what I should have been doing and what I was actually doing were two entirely different things... What I should have been doing was writing a few holiday cards, but, instead I made up a few batches of Spiced Tea.  It's a variation of a favorite of mine - Andre's Pizzeria in Glenwood Springs used to serve Russian Tea and this is the closest recipe I have been able to find.  It's been a hit with my neighbors for several years :-) Great hot drink to sip when the temps dip and the snow flies!

Holiday Baking

These are Oatmeal/Craisin cookies.  I love the zip these dried cranberries add!  The first round yielded eight dozen, so I'll be baking another double batch...  I've got them hidden from Doug in the freezer so they'll still be available when I'm ready to package them up as part of my holiday treat for friends and neighbors :-)

Welcome December!

Brrrrr!!!  I am not a fan of the cold, but I think snow is really beautiful :-)  As soon as Doug shovels, I'll be on my way out...

Movie Night at the Lyric

The Bike Co-op is proud to announce two Fort Collins screenings of the feature length documentary With My Own Two Wheels. Two Wheels weaves together the stories of five individuals across the globe into a single narrative about the bicycle as a vehicle for change. The documentary was shot on location in Zambia, Ghana, India, Guatemala and California. Each screening will be followed by a question and answer session with the Producer/Co-director of the film Jacob Seigel-Boettner.

Watch trailer here: http://vimeo.com/19734902

The screenings will take place at 7:00pm on December 7th and 8th at The Lyric Cinema Cafe. Tickets for each night can be purchased before the event for $10 at the Bike Co-op, Matter Bookstore, or The Lyric Cinema Cafe. Tickets will also be available at the door for $15. Sponsored by Poudre Valley Health Systems and New Belgium Brewery.

Snowmen Galore...

I got busy and decorated for the holidays, which in our house means winter snowmen.  I have collected quite a few over the years...  Add them to the occasional penguin and they can stay out all season to keep us cheerful :-)

Happy Birthday, Mickey Mouse!

After appearing in several test screens earlier that year, Mickey Mouse made his official debut in "Steamboat Willy" on November 28, 1928.  Since then, Mickey has become an icon and the endearing symbol of Walt Disney.

In 1978, Mickey became the first cartoon character to receive a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame :-)

Experiments

Brianne is quite the adventurer as this is my first attempt ever at coloring a whole head of hair.  She has been wanting to have red hair for some time now and, after seeing her cousin's new doo and hearing that my sister did it for her,  she decided to have me give it a try...  Let me tell you:  putting purple goo on someone's beautiful hair is too stressful - I am definitely not ready to give up my day job!

On the upside, she got checked out by 4 seriously-less-than-subtle teenage males yesterday, so she considers it a success.

Black Friday :-P

There was not a single gift I needed to buy badly enough
to make me even consider braving the Black Friday crowds...

On the other hand, the grocery store was practically barren :-)

Eating Season

Yesterday started off the 2011 Eating Season which, by my calendar extends through my January 6 birthday (you can't get older without ice cream and cake).  It was a splendid feast as my sister is a wonderful cook and her assistant is marvelous as well :-)

The Eating Season finds many of us, myself included, saying things we usually wouldn't:
Why, yes, I'd love another piece of pie.  Whip cream?  Of course...
A little more eggnog won't hurt and, while we're at it, let's add just a touch more rum...
Let's make cookies for Santa!  Oh, Dear, Santa can't eat all these.  Mommy will have to have one of the extras - better make that three.  We don't want them to go to waste...

January will find me noticing the jeans are just a little snug.  This will, invariably, be followed by the realization that **GASP!!** Spring Break (aka Swimsuit Season) is only two months away.  While I'm getting in extra time at the gym, I will be telling myself that next Eating Season I will be less enthusiastic...  Yea, Right!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am Thankful for my loving family and dear friends - I have truly been blessed!

Today's Sing-A-Long

Over the river, and through the wood,
To Grandfather's house we go;
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
through the white and drifted snow.
Over the river, and through the wood—
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose
As over the ground we go.
Over the river, and through the wood,
To have a first-rate play.
Hear the bells ring, "Ting-a-ling-ding",
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!
Over the river, and through the wood
Trot fast, my dapple-gray!
Spring over the ground like a hunting-hound,
For this is Thanksgiving Day.
Over the river, and through the wood—
And straight through the barnyard gate,
We seem to go extremely slow,
It is so hard to wait!
Over the river, and through the wood—
Now Grandmother's cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

Miniature Bus

This is what happens when you mix a Bus and a Mini...  It's got everything I need:  AWD for tackling Colorado terrain and weather; enough power to keep me from getting stuck behind slow-moving traffic up a mountain pass (because I've got extra patience for that - NOT); plenty of cargo space to handle my new job - apparently, I'm the official package delivery girl for the Bike Co-Op.

I am considering naming her Minnie as in Mini Bus and Minnie Pearl.  I think we'll get along nicely :-)

The Down-Size Plan

This is the Mini I like - zoom, zoom!!  However, this would be like trying to squeeze the contents of my very large bag/purse into a wristlet -  ain't gonna happen.

Step One of the Down-Sizing Plan

The wheels on the Bus will be going round and round for someone else...

This is the first vehicle that I have ever owned that I will honestly miss.  The ol' gal has safely taken us to and from many fun and exciting family adventures.

At the Break of Dawn...

Wonder Mom cheerfully picked up her darling teen and a few friends at 2am last night after the midnight showing of Breaking Dawn.  All were delivered safely home....

In More News:  Wicked Mom of the West was seen flying her broom out of the dungeon door, obviously sleep deprived...

Holiday Tunes Already?

Almost everywhere I have gone this week, Christmas music is playing. Personally, I think it's a little early - it's not even Thanksgiving yet. However, to avoid coming off as a complete Grinch, I decided if I can't beat them, I'd join them...

Pretty in Pink

A pretty, pink bow may not be a big deal for most people, but, at our house, it means a freshly groomed Daisy - she smells waayyy better to snuggle with now :-)
