And The Award Goes To...

The very first Emmy Awards were held on January 25, 1949 for the purpose of recognizing shows produced and aired in Los Angles.  Not nearly as showy as it is today, it was held at the Hollywood Athletic Club.  In the years since, it has evolved to recognize excellence in national television.

Shirley Dinsdale was the first recipient of an Emmy for Most Outstanding Television Personality.  Shirley was a ventriloquist who worked in radio and television with her dummy, Judy Splinters, and it was for the show by the same name that she won the award.
