I couldn't actually get this one to work.  Admittedly, it could easily be operator error, but I've got a couple of tried and true methods:  For starters, they actually make products for this project.  I recommend the felt marker type - they work better than the crayon"ish" ones and come in a variety of wood stain colors.   I've also used permanent markers - these are particularly helpful with black painted furniture, cabinets and frames.  


Give the walnuts a try, but remember there's probably a Lowe's, Home Depot or Ace just around the corner.  Good luck!
